Bone material strength in normoglycemic and hyperglycemic black and white older adults

Osteoporosis International Dec 07, 2019

Huges BD, et al. -This cross-sectional study was done to determine whether altered cortical bone material properties could be detected in black men and postmenopausal women aged ≥ 50 years with no diabetes (50 white, 6 black), prediabetes (75 white, 13 black), and T2D of ≤ 5 years duration (24 white and 16 black). The relationship between the glycemia category and bone material strength index (BMSi) varied by race. In white individuals, following standardization for age, gender, and BMI, BMSi did not vary in the glycemia categories. On the contrary, in the blacks, in people with T2D vs in those with prediabetes and no diabetes, BMSi varied and was notably lower. Moreover, in either whites or blacks, neither the trabecular bone score nor urine pentosidine varied across the glycemia categories. Findings imply various relationships of glycemia with cortical bone material properties in blacks and whites, with blacks, compared with whites in early diabetes, potentially being more susceptive to impaired cortical bone properties.
