Bone involvement in young adults with cystic fibrosis awaiting lung transplantation for end-stage respiratory failure
Osteoporosis International Jun 08, 2019
Cairoli E, et al. - Researchers examined 42 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients (24 females, age 34.0 ± 8.4 years) awaiting lung transplantation for end-stage respiratory failure for the prevalence of cystic fibrosis-related bone disease (CFBD) and related risk factors. Findings revealed a high prevalence of CFBD in these adults, despite the overall improvement of CF care. The development of CFBD could be significantly attributed to suboptimal 25OHVitD levels. A careful evaluation of bone health in CF patients is recommended in the presence of nephrolithiasis, as it is identified to be associated with worse bone status and with severe vitamin D deficiency.
