Body mass index in 1.9 million adolescents and stroke in young adulthood
Stroke May 28, 2021
Bardugo A, Fishman B, Libruder C, et al. - In this nationwide population-based study, the link of adolescent body mass index with the first stroke event in young adults was assessed in a cohort of 1.9 million male and female adolescents. Classification of body mass index was done as per the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention percentiles. Experts applied Cox proportional hazard models. They reported 1,088 first stroke events (921 ischemic and 167 hemorrhagic; mean diagnosis age, 41.0 years). Findings revealed a link of high adolescent body mass index with ischemic stroke in young adults with or without diabetes. An increment in the future burden of stroke in young adults may be brought about by the growing prevalence of adolescent obesity.
