Body mass index, change in weight, body weight variability and outcomes in type II diabetes mellitus (from the ACCORD trial)
The American Journal of Cardiology Dec 07, 2018
Yeboah P, et al. – In this study, researchers investigated the impact of weight fluctuations on outcomes in patients with diabetes mellitus by analyzing the public use dataset from the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial. Specifically, they evaluated the associations of baseline weight and change in weight and body weight variability (BWV) with outcomes among the 10,251 ACCORD study participants whose weights were recorded annually during the trial. Overall, they noted a remarkable association of BWV with poor outcomes, which was independent of cardiovascular risk factors and body mass index. Findings were consistent with significant risk associated with weight fluctuations in patients with diabetes mellitus.
