Body mass index associates with disease relapse in patients with giant cell arteritis
International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases Jul 04, 2019
Matsumoto K, et al. - Data from 30 consecutive, newly diagnosed patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) was reviewed by the researchers in order to recognize risk factors associated with disease relapse in GCA. Eight patients relapsed at a median of 28 weeks from GCA diagnosis, out of 30 patients. Male-dominance with a higher body mass index (BMI) was observed in patients with relapsed GCA than non-relapse patients. A markedly higher relapse rate than those with a BMI <21 kg/m2 was exhibited by patients with BMI ≥ 21 kg/m2, during the 100-week follow-up. Hence, in patients with GCA, there's a possibility that higher BMI could be associated with relapse of GCA.
