Body mass index and physical activity in seven-year-old children whose mothers exercised during pregnancy: Follow-up of a multicenter randomized controlled trial
BMC Pediatrics Nov 11, 2021
Bjøntegaard KA, Stafne SN, Mørkved S, et al. - Researchers sought to determine if and how regular moderate intensity exercise during pregnancy is associated with the children’s BMI and physical activity (PA) at 7 years of age. In addition, they examined the correlation between children’s and mothers’ BMI and PA.
Follow-up of a multicenter randomized controlled trial in which a total of 855 women were randomized either to follow a 12-week structured exercise protocol or receive standard antenatal care, during pregnancy.
The data regarding their child’s height, weight, and PA were sought at the 7-year follow-up.
The follow-up study included 164 (38.2%) children and mothers in the intervention group and 117 (27.5%) in the control group.
Analysis revealed no correlation of regular moderate intensity exercise during pregnancy with BMI or PA of the children at 7 years.
Findings support encouraging good maternal health given its possible influence on the health of the next generation.
