Body mass index and early outcomes following mitral valve surgery for degenerative disease
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Dec 05, 2019
Burns DJP, Rapetto F, Angelini GD, et al. - Researchers aimed to better define the association between obesity measures and early clinical outcomes following mitral valve surgery for degenerative disease using data acquired from the United Kingdom National Adult Cardiac Surgery Audit. As per multivariable Cox proportional hazard modeling, there was no association between mortality and an increase in BMI of 5 points, a BMI quintile increase, or being classed “obese” by WHO standards. They observed an association of a 5-point BMI increase with an increased hazard of deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) but not with perioperative cerebrovascular event (CVA). Approximately U-shaped association between BMI and mortality was noted. DSWI appeared linear, while CVA demonstrated an inverted U, or possible hourglass.
