Body composition assessment and sarcopenia in patients with gastric cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Gastric Cancer Jan 08, 2019
Kamarajah SK, et al. - Researchers undertook this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the current literature on body composition assessment in patients with gastric cancer and its impact on perioperative outcomes. They identified 39 studies reporting the assessment of body composition in 8,402 patients. Only 21 studies reported on the impact of preoperative sarcopenia on postoperative outcomes. Upon meta-analysis of nine studies reporting on overall survival after gastrectomy, they noted significantly worse survival in patients with preoperative sarcopenia. Hence, they suggested assessment of body composition as a potentially clinically useful tool that could support decision-making in patients with gastric cancer. However, the assessment of current postoperative outcomes is limited due to the variation in the methods of assessing and reporting body composition in this patient group.
