International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Oct 14, 2017
Atwood CM, et al. - An assessment was carried out of the trends in the use of blood transfusion for the management of children with sickle cell disease (SCD) undergoing tonsillectomy. A substantial rise was revealed in the proportion of patients with SCD receiving perioperative blood transfusions for tonsillectomy, between 1997 to 2012. Similar complication rates with increased charges and length of hospital stays were illustrated by the transfusion recipients compared to those who did not receive a transfusion, alongside the rise in the frequency of transfusion.
