Blood transfusion and outcome after transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Jul 27, 2019
Maaranen P, et al. - In this nationwide, retrospective multicenter study, researchers assessed the prognostic influence of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion on the results post-transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). They obtained data from 2,130 patients who had TAVR for aortic stenosis from 2008 to 2017. This study included the remaining 1,818 patients after excluding those who underwent TAVR through nontransfemoral accesses. A higher risk of early and late adverse events was seen in patients who had a blood transfusion following TAVR. With the increasing amount of transfused RBC units and when operation for excessive bleeding was needed, risk of adverse events grew significantly.
