Blood pressure variability in subacute stage and risk of major vascular events in ischemic stroke survivors

Journal of Hypertension Sep 08, 2019

Kang J, Kim BJ, Yang MH, et al. - Using a prospective stroke registry database, researchers evaluated the impact of blood pressure (BP) in the subacute stage of ischemic stroke on subsequent vascular events following acute ischemic stroke. Participants included consecutive ischemic stroke patients reporting within 48 hours of onset. A composite of stroke, myocardial infarction, and vascular death that occurred within 1 year following hospital discharge was considered as the primary outcome. According to findings, an increase in the 1-year risk of major vascular events may be caused by BP variability—but not by mean BP in the subacute stage of ischemic stroke, among patients surviving its acute stage.
