Blood pressure, antihypertensive medication and neuropsychiatric symptoms in older people with dementia: The COSMOS study
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Aug 07, 2020
de Jong‐Schmit BEM, Poortvliet RKE, Bohringer S, et al. - This study was carried out to assess if there is a correlation between low systolic blood pressure (SBP) and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and whether NPS is seen more often in older people with dementia who use antihypertensive medication. Researchers examined baseline data from the COSMOS study, a multicenter clustered trial to examine data including 765 participants from 72 nursing home units from 37 nursing homes in Norway. This analysis recruited 412 individuals with a mean age of 86.9 years; 53.9% had an Minimal Mental State Examination score of < 11. There was no correlation between low SBP and NPS, nor was there one between antihypertensive use and NPS.
