Blood-brain barrier breakdown, neuroinflammation, and cognitive decline in older adults

Bowman GL, et al. - In the present study, researchers tested the premise that blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown is correlated with cognitive decline and inflammation in nondemented elderly people. Using sandwich immunoassays, cerebrospinal fluid and serum inflammatory markers were measured in 120 subjects. Findings suggested an correlation of BBB breakdown with cognitive decline. It was noted that cell adhesion, neutrophil migration, high-density lipoprotein metabolism, and angiogenesis were implicated.
