Bleeding risk of warfarin and direct oral anticoagulants in younger population: A historical cohort study using a Japanese claims database

International Journal of Medical Sciences Dec 19, 2018

Yokoyama S, et al. - From April 2012 to March 2015, researchers analyzed 2046 cases [503 warfarin (WF) and 1543 direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC)] at the Japan medical data center (JMDC) to evaluate the risk agents for bleeding issues in younger subjects treated with either WF or DOAC. They created Kaplan-Meier curves to represent the time of bleeding event eg, gastrointestinal and intracranial hemorrhage etc and estimated hazard ratios for total bleeding incidents induced by oral anticoagulants by using Cox proportional regression models. They observed a significant variation in the incidence of gastrointestinal hemorrhage between the WF and DOAC groups, but no notable difference in intracranial hemorrhage indicating the bleeding risk of DOAC analogous to that of WF in the Japanese younger population.
