Bleeding changes after levonorgestrel 52mg intrauterine system insertion for contraception in women with self-reported heavy menstrual bleeding
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dec 26, 2019
Chen BA, et al. - Researchers examined how bleeding patterns changes in women with self-reported heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) prior to levonorgestrel 52mg intrauterine system (IUS) insertion. They used data from a multicenter trial in which the contraceptive efficacy and safety of levonorgestrel 52mg IUS was determined for up to 10 years in a total of 1,714 women (aged 16-45 years old). Of these, they included 1,513 women in this analysis; baseline HMB was reported in 150 (9.9%) of these. Outcomes indicated the occurrence of a significant improvement quickly after levonorgestrel 52mg IUS insertion in most women who self-report HMB. These women had very low discontinuation for bleeding complaints.
