Birth outcomes in a Swedish population of women reporting a history of violence including domestic violence during pregnancy: A longitudinal cohort study
BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Apr 03, 2020
Finnbogadóttir H, et al. - A Swedish population of women reporting a history of violence including domestic violence during pregnancy was assessed for childbirth outcomes. Using a longitudinal cohort design, assessment of 1,939 pregnant women (≥ 18 years) was done; two questionnaires were administered to the participants, both questionnaires were administered in the early and late stages of their pregnancy. Birth records of 1,694 mothers who gave birth between June 2012 and April 2014 comprised the available dataset. Outcomes revealed a negative impact of a history of violence and/or exclusively a history of emotional abuse on childbirth outcomes including cesarean section and premature birth. Therefore, they emphasize early recognition of a history of or ongoing violence in order to lend extra support to women which may have positive influence on her birth outcomes.
