Birth outcomes and disease activity during pregnancy in a prospective cohort of women with psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis

Arthritis Care & Research May 17, 2019

Smith CJF, et al. - Researchers examined participants from the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists Autoimmune Disease Project from 2004-2018, to assess the link between disease activity during pregnancy in women with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and adverse birth outcomes. An increased risk for moderate preterm delivery (32-36 weeks’ gestation), oligohydramnios, and Caesarean delivery was reported in relation to PsA (n = 117), compared to healthy controls (n=717). An increased risk of delivering infants needing intensive care was observed in women with AS (n = 129). Women with PsA demonstrated a link between high 32 week Health Assessment Questionnaire score and preterm delivery. A link between high Routine Assessment of Patient Index Data 3 score and Caesarian delivery and between 2nd trimester corticosteroid use and preterm delivery was evident in women with AS.
