Biomarkers of mineral metabolism and progression of aortic valve and mitral annular calcification: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
Atherosclerosis Apr 18, 2019
Bortnick AE, et al. - Researchers assessed the incidence and progression of aortic valve calcification (AVC) and mitral annular calcification (MAC) in relation to mineral biomarkers. In the community-based Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, baseline measurements of serum fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) (n=6,547 participants), phosphate (n=6,547), fetuin-A (n=2,550) were investigated for their correlations to AVC and MAC on computed tomography (CT) at baseline and at a median 2.4 (1.6, 3.1) years later. Findings demonstrated a significant association of serum FGF-23 with accelerated annual MAC progression. There was no link between the studied biomarkers and accelerated annual AVC progression, nor was there an association between MAC and phosphate or fetuin-A.
