Biomarkers of cerebral injury for prediction of postoperative cognitive dysfunction in patients undergoing cardiac surgery
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia May 21, 2021
Wiberg S, Holmgaard F, Zetterberg H, et al. - By conducting post-hoc analyses from a randomized clinical trial, researchers attempted to determine the ability of the biomarkers neuron-specific enolase (NSE), tau, neurofilament light chain, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) to predict POCD at discharge among cardiac surgery patients. This study involved adult patients receiving elective or subacute on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting and/or aortic valve replacement. It was found that significantly increased postoperative serum levels of tau and GFAP were present in cardiac surgery patients with POCD at discharge, however, only modest predictive abilities of the biomarkers were evident for POCD at discharge. There was no link between postoperative levels of NSE and POCD at discharge.
