Biomarker of collagen turnover (C-terminal telopeptide) and prognosis in patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes

Journal of the American Heart Association May 01, 2019

Zelniker TA, et al. - In a nested biomarker analysis including 4094 subjects from a study of patients with non–ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome, researchers assessed C-terminal telopeptide (beta-CTx) as well as the risk of cardiovascular death or new or worsening heart failure (HF). They measured baseline serum beta-CTx, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. Findings revealed the association of levels of beta-CTx (a biomarker of collagen turnover) with cardiovascular death and HF in patients with non–ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome. Only a weak or non-significant correlation of beta-CTx with traditional biomarkers of cardiovascular death and HF was noted. This biomarker could offer complementary pathobiological insight as well as risk stratification in these patients.
