Biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stents vs second-generation drug-eluting stents in patients with and without diabetes mellitus: A single-center study
Cardiovascular Diabetology Aug 19, 2018
Tang XF, et al. - In this study conducted in a single center in China, researchers assessed whether second-generation drug eluting stents (G2-DESs) or biodegradable polymer drug eluting stents (BP-DESs) implantation is effective and safe for diabetes mellitus (DM) patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention vs those without DM. Participants included a total of 7,666 consecutive patients who exclusively had G2-DES or BP-DES implantation throughout 2013 in their center. These cases were examined for target lesion revascularization (TLR) and a composite of death or myocardial infarction (MI) at 2-year follow-up. Findings showed that in patients without DM, G2-DESs vs BP-DESs displayed better efficacy, seen via a reduced risk of TLR, and similar safety. Also, 2-year follow-up observations in patients with DM revealed similar efficacy and safety of G2-DESs vs BP-DESs.
