Bilateral multiple oncocytic cysts of the parotid gland in type 2 diabetes patients
Histopathology Nov 11, 2019
Soares CD, Carlos R, Mota MVB, et al. - In this study, series of eight cases of a different salivary gland lesion identified by multiple oncocytic cysts were shown, and new pathologic insights about its pathogenesis were given. Seven individuals had proven T2D whereas obesity was recognized in five people. Results robustly proposed that T2D is related to changes in GLUT1 expression in the cells of striated ducts with mitochondrial dysfunction, leading to a hyperplastic process identified through multiple oncocytic cysts. Hence, for this lesion, the classification of “diabetes associated–bilateral multiple oncocytic cysts of the parotid gland” is suggested.
