Bilateral internal iliac artery embolization for pelvic trauma: Effectiveness and safety

American Journal of Surgery Jan 08, 2020

Bonde A, et al. - Researchers investigated the safety and efficacy of bilateral internal iliac artery embolization (BIIAE) for pelvic trauma. They assessed 61 patients undergoing BIIAE for pelvic trauma at a Level I Trauma Center between 1998 and 2018. Among these, bleeding control was established radiographically in 60 (98%) and clinically in 55 (90%), including 4 (7%) patients who required repeat embolization. When combined with other methods of hemostasis, BIIAE showed the overall clinical effectiveness and safety rates of 90% and 100% respectively, for pelvic bleeding control.
