Bifocals reduce strabismus in children with Down syndrome: Evidence from a randomized controlled trial
Acta Ophthalmologica Feb 02, 2020
de Weger C, et al. - Researchers conducted this multicentre randomized controlled trial to compare the impacts of bifocal glasses with those of unifocal glasses in children with Down syndrome (DS). They examined the effects of bifocals on the angle of strabismus, binocularity, stereopsis, refractive errors and accommodative lags in this analysis. One hundred nineteen children with DS (aged 2 to 16 years) were randomly allocated for bifocal or unifocal glasses (with full correction of refractive error in cycloplegia). According to findings, bifocals with complete refractive error correction decrease the manifest angle of strabism in just a few weeks. Over the course of 1 year, no effects on accommodation, refractive error, stereopsis, and binocularity occurred.
