Better care for less money: Cost-effectiveness of integrated care in multi-episode patients with severe psychotic disorders
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Dec 17, 2019
Karow A, Brettschneider C, König HH, et al. - Researchers compared integrated care with therapeutic assertive community treatment (IC-TACT) vs standard care (SC) in terms of cost-effectiveness in multiple episode psychosis. They compared 12-month IC-TACT in patients with schizophrenia-spectrum and bipolar I disorders vs a historical control group. They found significantly lower days in inpatient and day-clinic care and correspondingly lower expenses in IC-TACT, as observed over 12 months. A higher number of treatment contacts and higher associated expenses were demonstrated by IC-TACT, within outpatient care. Significantly higher adjusted incremental quality-adjusted life years were reported for IC-TACT vs SC. Overall, IC-TACT vs SC was found to be cost-effective. In order to improve results and save total expense for patients with severe psychotic disorders, the use of prima facies “costly” TACT teams was highly advised.
