Benzodiazepines increase the likelihood of both infectious and thrombotic complications

The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Jun 28, 2021

Skicki E, Morgan M, Brown C, et al. - Benzodiazepines (BZDs) cause immunomodulation by modulating peripheral γ-amino-butyric acid type A on macrophages as well as cause inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines increasing infections. In prior studies, an increase in thrombotic complications has been observed in correlation with infections. Researchers herein investigated this correlation in trauma patients, hypothesizing that the presence of BZDs on admission urine drug screen (UDS) would increase rates of both complications. Querying the Pennsylvania Trauma Outcome Study database from 2003 to 2018, they identified a total of 3,393 patients (2.08%) with infectious complications, and 3,048 (1.87%) with occurrence of thrombotic complications. Higher odds of both infectious and thrombotic complications were recorded among trauma patients with a positive UDS for BZDs. Moreover, those with infections showed higher odds of thrombotic complications.
