Benign intracerebral hemorrhage: A population at low risk for hematoma growth and poor outcome
Journal of the American Heart Association Apr 18, 2019
Li Q, et al. - Using multivariable logistic regression analyses, researchers wanted to describe benign intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) as well as the link between benign ICH, hematoma expansion, and functional outcome among 288 patients with ICH. The participants in this prospectively collected cohort presented to a tertiary teaching hospital between July 2011 and February 2017 within 6 hours of symptom onset. Following initial computed tomographic scanning, participants were asked to undergo follow-up computed tomographic scanning within 36 hours. Low risk of hematoma expansion and poor outcome were observed among patients with benign ICH. Less intensive monitoring may be safe in these patients and therapies aimed at preventing ICH expansion are unlikely to be beneficial for these patients, as benign ICH has a low likelihood of expanding.
