Beneficial response of blood pressure to short-term continuous positive airway pressure in Chinese patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome
Blood Pressure Monitoring Jul 15, 2018
Wang X, et al. - In this prospective study, researchers examined Chinese patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) to investigate the influence of short-term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on blood pressure (BP) and cardiac rhythm. They selected 214 patients who previously encountered a full night polysomnography and on these subjects, performed both ambulatory BP monitoring and Holter monitoring for 24 hours. A total of 59 patients with OSAHS who underwent home CPAP for 30 days, again, underwent ambulatory BP testing, while 15 patients with OSAHS had Holter repeated within 2-3 days after institution of CPAP therapy. They found that short-term CPAP provided modest reductions in BP in patients with OSAHS with hypertension. Such reductions were especially seen in the morning and at night-time.
