Behavioral predictors of weight regain in postmenopausal women: Exploratory results from the Breast Cancer and Exercise Trial in Alberta
Obesity Aug 29, 2019
McNeil J, et al. - Researchers conducted this secondary analysis to explore connections between changes in energy balance and sleep behaviors and the risk of weight regain following exercise-induced weight loss in postmenopausal women. Of the 400 participants who initially randomized in the Breast Cancer and Exercise Trial in Alberta, 227 lost weight following the exercise intervention of moderate to vigorous intensity and were included in this analysis. At the end of the intervention and the end of follow-up, self-reported energy intake (EI), sleep duration, quality and timing, and objective measurements of physical activity (PA) and sedentary time were collected. During follow-up, participants regained 43% of the weight loss. According to these exploratory outcomes, decreases in moderate to vigorous PA; increases in EI, fat intake, and sedentary time; and delayed sleep timing midpoint were significantly linked to risk of weight regain.
