Behavior and quality of life at 6 years for children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome
Pediatrics Nov 10, 2019
Goldberg CS, Hu C, Brosig C, et al. - Researchers examined participants of the Single Ventricle Reconstruction Trial who were 6-year-old children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, to determine behavioral, quality of life (QoL), and functional status outcomes in these individuals. A comparison of these outcomes with those in the normative population was performed and risk factors for worse consequences within the single-ventricle group were also examined. The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Second Edition (Vineland-II), Behavior Assessment System for Children 2, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory 4.0, and other measures of QoL and functional status were incorporated as parent-response instruments. Findings revealed the presence of difficulty in areas of adaptive behavior, behavioral symptoms, QoL, and functional status at 6 years in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Sociodemographic factors and measures of greater course complexity constituted major risks for adverse outcomes. However, less than one-third of outcome variance was unveiled by models.
