Baseline ultrasound examination as possible predictor of relapse in patients affected by juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)
Annals of Rheumatic Diseases Feb 15, 2018
De Lucia O, et al. - In patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), the association between joint ultrasonography and clinical examination was assessed. Authors also evaluated if synovitis detected by ultrasonography in clinically inactive patients predicted arthritis flares. At individual patient level, ultrasound (US) abnormalities were a strong predictor of relapse. The risk of flare in US-positive compared to US-negative patients was almost 4 times higher, regardless of the treatment received. Irrespective of both the International League of Associations for Rheumatology and Wallace categories, patients ought to be carefully followed in case of US abnormalities.
