Baseline psychiatric diagnoses are associated with early readmissions and long hospital length of stay after bariatric surgery
Surgical Endoscopy Apr 29, 2019
Jalilvand A, et al. - Researchers examined how psychiatric diagnoses influence hospital length of stay (LOS), 30-day readmission rates after bariatric surgery and post-operative weight loss outcomes. At a single academic institution, 354 patients (78% were female) underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass; 60% underwent LSG. Observations revealed significantly higher early readmission rates among patients with baseline or historical depression, anxiety, and/or bipolar disorder. They noted a hospital LOS ≥ 4 days among those with multiple diagnoses.
