Baseline carotid intima-media thickness and stroke recurrence during secondary prevention with pravastatin
Stroke Jun 01, 2019
Wada S, et al. - As a prespecified post hoc investigation of the Japan Statin Treatment Against Recurrent Stroke Echo Study, researchers examined, with and without pravastatin treatment, the 5-year stroke recurrence rate according to the baseline mean carotid intima-media thickness (IMT). A total of 793 patients were investigated, with 388 in the pravastatin group and 405 in the control group. Participants in the study were randomized to receive pravastatin 10 mg/day (pravastatin group) or nonstatin treatment (control group) 1:1 for 5 years. In non-cardioembolic infarction patients with the highest tertile IMT, long-term pravastatin administration can prevent the occurrence of atherothrombotic brain infarction.
