Barriers and facilitators to weight management in overweight and obese women living in Australia with PCOS: A qualitative study
BMC Endocrine Disorders Oct 30, 2019
Lim S, et al. - In this qualitative study, researchers explored the experience of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age, in weight management and determined the facilitators and barriers to lifestyle modifications in PCOS women. Ten PCOS women partook in focus groups and semi-structured telephone interviews on lifestyle and weight management in PCOS. Using the method of constant comparison, thematic analysis of the transcripts have been conducted. According to findings, PCOS women face a number of personal, environmental and social facilitators and barriers to lifestyle modification for weight loss. Although many of these are often faced by women without PCOS, women with PCOS face additional challenges to low self-confidence and high prevalence of negative thoughts that may hinder their ability to sustain lifestyle change attempts over the long term. Future research should further investigate the impact on weight management and other aspects of PCOS of the emotional and mental burden of PCOS. The psychosocial aspect of PCOS should also be addressed in future lifestyle intervention.
