Barriers and facilitators to screening and treating malnutrition in older adults living in the community: A mixed-methods synthesis
BMC Family Practice Jul 22, 2019
Harris PS, et al. - Via this review of relevant studies published in MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, DARE, CINAHL, Cochrane Central and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, researchers investigated barriers and facilitators to implementing malnutrition screen and treat policies in primary/community care. They also looked at the barriers that have been addressed and those facilitators that have been successfully included in existing interventions. To be eligible for inclusion, the studies were required to involve older, community-dwelling adults (65+) or healthcare professionals who would screen and treat such patients. Analysis of 21 studies revealed various barriers and facilitators. Using intervention design, some of these were addressed in these studies, although a prominent gap seemed to be psychosocial barriers. Although it seems to be possible to address all barriers or to make use of all facilitators in a study, this was not done in even a single included study. The barriers likely to be encountered by both patients and healthcare professionals are recommended to be taken into account in interventions endeavoring to implement screen-and-treat approaches to malnutrition in primary care.
