Barriers and adherence to pain management in advanced cancer patients
Pain Practice Apr 14, 2021
Mercadante S, Adile C, Tirelli W, et al. - Via this prospective cross‐sectional study in patients with advanced cancer receiving chronic opioid therapy, researchers sought to determine barriers to pain management and analgesic medication adherence in these patients. Among a total of 113 analyzed patients, they used the following measurement instruments: the Brief Pain Inventory, Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS), Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale, Barriers Questionnaire II, Medication Adherence Rating Scale, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Overall findings suggest mild barriers to pain management. The main factors associated with barriers were psychological factors such as depression. Mostly, poor adherence to analgesic medication was demonstrated as negative side‐effects and attitudes toward psychotropic medication (seen more often in females), and was more often identified in, and was linked with the ESAS items pain and depression.
