Bariatric surgery outcomes in patients on preoperative therapeutic anticoagulation: An analysis of the 2015 to 2017 MBSAQIP
Obesity Surgery Jul 12, 2019
Modasi A, et al. - Safety of bariatric surgery on patients taking therapeutic anticoagulation medications preoperatively was investigated. The MBSAQIP database yielded data of 430,396 patients who underwent a primary LSG or LRYGB; of these, 11,013 (2.56%) were taking anticoagulation medications pre-operatively. Observations revealed a significantly higher risk of adverse outcomes post-operatively among bariatric surgery patients who were on anticoagulation medications pre-operatively. Findings emphasize undertaking careful consideration before proceeding with bariatric surgery in patients who require long-term anticoagulation.
