Casals G, Andreu A, Yasmina Y, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study in women from 18–39 years undergoing bariatric surgery (BS) with the aim to determine if and how BS affects fertility, pregnancy, and newborn outcomes in these reproductive age women. In addition, they examined the outcomes according to surgical procedure and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis. During the study period, 872 women underwent BS; of these, 298 were 18–39 years old. Reproductive data were obtained from 217. Outcomes revealed association of undergoing BS with an improvement in several reproductive outcomes as well as improvement in menstrual regularity especially in PCOS women. Patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) had a higher percentage of patients with a time-to-pregnancy longer than 12 months (17.8%) compared with those who underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (7.1%). An improvement in several perinatal results was observed after BS, with a decrease in macrosomia rate and birth weight.
