Bariatric surgery improves outcomes after lower extremity arthroplasty in the morbidly obese: A propensity score-matched analysis of a New York Statewide database
Journal of Arthroplasty Dec 07, 2017
McLawhorn A, et al. - This study was carried out in matched cohorts of morbidly obese patients, receiving and not receiving prior bariatric surgery. The goal was to compare risks for revision and short-term complications after total joint arthroplasty (TJA) in these populations. Findings demonstrated that bariatric surgery prior to TJA was related to attenuated comorbidity burden at the time of TJA and with reduced post-TJA complications, after accounting for relevant selection biases. However, it was also evident that bariatric surgery did not reduce the risk for revision surgery for either total knee arthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty.
