Bariatric surgery improves knee function and not knee pain in the early postoperative period

Hamdi A, et al. - Authors sought to evaluate the impact of “rapid” weight loss induced after bariatric surgery on knee pain and function. With surgically induced rapid weight loss, experts noted significant improvement of knee function, particularly related to sports. Nonetheless, knee pain remained the same. They found that this could be associated with increased high-impact knee exercises and reduced lean mass. Improvement in the symptoms and decrease the need for knee replacements in the long-term could be achieved with tailored exercise programs for bariatric surgery patients postoperatively.
