Bariatric surgery impacts levels of serum lipids during pregnancy
Obesity Facts Mar 01, 2020
Bozkurt L, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to assess differences in serum lipids in pregnant women after bariatric surgery vs obese and lean mothers. Twenty-five women with a history of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), 19 obese and 19 normal-weight controls were involved at the 24th–28th gestational week for determination of fasting lipids with follow-up in a subgroup after delivery. Women after RYGB displayed lower total-cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein C (LDL-C), non-high-density lipoprotein C (non-HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) vs obese mothers. Women after RYGB despite their higher BMI exhibited lower TC, LDL-C, and non-HDL-C than normal-weight mothers. Birth weight percentiles of RYGB offspring were related to maternal TC, LDL-C, non-HDL but not HDL-C or TG. According to findings, pregnancies following RYGB exhibit changes in physiologic patterns in lipid profile.
