Bariatric surgery and the risk of cancer in a large multisite cohort
Annals of Surgery Dec 22, 2018
Schauer DP, et al. - Given the strong association of obesity with many types of cancer, researchers investigated if bariatric surgery lowers this risk of cancer. Using data from a large integrated health insurance and care delivery systems with five study sites, they conducted this retrospective cohort study involving 22,198 individuals who had bariatric surgery and 66,427 individuals who did not have surgery (matched on sex, age, study site, body mass index, and Elixhauser comorbidity index). They identified 2,543 incident cancers after a mean follow-up of 3.5 years. Individuals undergoing bariatric surgery were identified to have a lower risk of incident cancer, particularly obesity-associated cancers (eg, postmenopausal breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and colon cancer).
