Bariatric surgery and the risk of alcohol‐related cirrhosis and alcohol misuse
Liver International Feb 06, 2021
Mellinger JL, Shedden K, Winder GS, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective observational study to ascertain if there is a relationship between bariatric surgery and a higher risk of alcohol‐related cirrhosis (AC) and alcohol misuse. Participants were obese adults with employer‐sponsored insurance administrative claims from 2008‐2016 with diagnosis codes for bariatric surgery. They found a correlation between bariatric surgery and a short‐term reduced risk of AC but possible long‐term elevated risk of AC in women. To attenuate this risk, the necessity for postoperative alcohol surveillance is indicated. For those who received sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic banding during the study period, overall risk of AC was lower; alcohol misuse increased for Roux‐en‐Y and sleeve gastrectomy recipients. In those who had surgery before 2008, women had increased risk of AC and alcohol misuse vs women without bariatric surgery.
