Bariatric surgery and hepatocellular carcinoma: A propensity score-matched analysis
Obesity Surgery Aug 06, 2018
Njei B, et al. - Obesity has been linked to rising incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the US, so researchers wanted to see if there was any correlation between prior-bariatric surgery and HCC. From 2004 to 2014, they searched the United States Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database for discharges with a diagnosis of morbid obesity. They included 2,881,414 patients in this study, of these, 267,082 (9.3%) underwent bariatric surgery. Findings suggested a lower prevalence of HCC and lower in-patient mortality in correlation with prior-bariatric surgery.
