Banded vs nonbanded sleeve gastrectomy: A randomized controlled trial with 3 years of follow-up

Fink JM, Hetzenecker A, Seifert G, et al. - Via performing the banded vs nonbanded sleeve gastrectomy single-center, randomized controlled trial, silicone-banded sleeve gastrectomy (BSG) was compared with nonbanded sleeve gastrectomy (SG) regarding weight loss, obesity-related comorbidities, and complications. Three-year follow-up was completed by 97% of the 94 randomized patients.Better weight loss was observed 3 years after surgery among those who underwent BSG vs nonbanded SG. Remission of type 2 diabetes occurred in 66.7% (4/6) after SG vs in 91.0% (10/11) after BSG. Three years after surgery, ring implantation associated with reduced frequency of symptomatic reflux episodes but elevated frequency of regurgitation.
