Balance and gait alterations observed more than 2 weeks after concussion: A systematic review and meta-analysis
American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Jun 24, 2019
Wood T, et al. - Via a systematic review of 22 studies, researchers assessed existing evidence of balance and gait changes lasting more than 2 weeks after concussion in adults. When participants were examined with eyes closed, for extended lengths of time, and with nonlinear regulatory statistics, balance alterations were observed for 2 weeks following concussion. A greater sway area in concussed individuals was observed through the meta-analysis of the center of pressure sway area with no visual feedback. Different types of gait alterations were observed signifying the adoption of a conservative gait strategy by concussed individuals. After 2 weeks post-concussion, subtle balance and gait alterations were noted. Further, improvements in diagnosis of concussion and the prevention of succeeding injury could come with better understanding these changes.
