B-type natriuretic peptide is a useful biomarker for the estimation of volume overload in children with hypertension on peritoneal dialysis
Nephrology Mar 14, 2019
Lee JH, et al. - In hypertensive children on peritoneal dialysis (PD), researchers assessed the utility of serum B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) as a biomarker of fluid retention. At initial and follow-up periods, body weight (BWt), blood pressure (BP) and serum BNP alterations were assessed. The link between the changes of BNP and BP was determined using linear regression. Overall 30 patients with 56 hypertensive events were analyzed. Findings revealed a marked drop in ∆SBP, ∆DBP, and ∆BNP following attenuation of ∆BWt. A significant correlation of ∆BNP with ∆SBP and ∆DBP was observed. Based on these findings, measuring serum BNP in hypertensive patients on PD was recommended for the assessment of volume status.
