Azithromycin treatment in children hospitalized with asthma: A retrospective cohort study

Journal of Asthma Mar 28, 2020

Douglas LC, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective cohort analysis among patients under 18 years old hospitalized for asthma, without concurrent infection, to assess the length of stay (LOS) and readmission rates in correlation with azithromycin therapy during hospitalization for acute asthma exacerbations in this pediatric population. LOS was the primary outcome, and secondary outcomes included 7, 30, and 90-day hospital readmission rates for asthma. The overall median LOS was found to be 2.3 days, and readmission for asthma was sought by 9% (480) within 90 days of discharge. A 20% (11 hour) longer LOS was reported in relation to azithromycin therapy, less than the 29% (16 hour) difference ascertained a priori as clinically relevant. Findings revealed no link of azithromycin therapy with a clinically relevant difference in hospital LOS or with readmission rates in this patient population.
