Axillary tumour burden in women with one abnormal node on ultrasound compared to women with multiple abnormal nodes
Clinical Radiology Jan 20, 2018
Puri S, et al. - Researchers designed this study to determine whether the number of abnormal nodes seen on preoperative axillary ultrasound (AUS) was a predictor of the number of positive nodes at histology for women with needle-biopsy-proven positive nodes. They revealed that around 3 in 4 patients with invasive tumour size ≤2 cm and 1 abnormal node on preoperative AUS had 2 or fewer positive nodes at axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) among women with needle-biopsy-proven positive nodes. These women were overtreated by upfront ALND and could be offered sentinel node biopsy (SNB).
