Poehls UG, Hack CC, Wunderle M, et al. - Given that participation rate determines the efficacy of early breast cancer detection programs and since the participation rate is influenced by risk factor awareness, researchers focused on the shifts in women’s risk factor awareness between 2004 and 2016. They compared the responses of 2,107 healthy women surveyed in 2004 with new data acquired using the same questionnaire in 2016. Awareness and opinions concerning breast cancer incidence, risk factors, risk perceptions, and levels of concern were indicated by 866 participants. They found that 24, 32, and 37% in 2004 vs 15, 18, and 23% in 2016, considered age at first birth, childlessness, and lack of breastfeeding as risk factors. The statistical significance of all changes was highlighted. Family history was perceived as a breast cancer risk factor by most of the women, and this did not alter, indicating the topic’s media prominence. A rise in the awareness of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as a risk factor was observed, likely due to public information following the large HRT studies. The reason for less frequent recognition of reproductive risk factors remained unclear.
